Nursing is an honored profession and important to the collective health of the country. This is echoed by the fact that the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that there will be over a million new nursing jobs of all types between 2020 and 2030. If you are interested in a career in nursing, or wish to further your existing nursing education, you may be interested in online nursing certificates and degree programs. Such online nursing programs can save you both time and money, especially if you are already working as a nurse.
Featured Programs
However, trying to find and compare online degrees and certificates is a considerable effort, as no standard exists for presenting online degree information on college Web sites. We’ve tried to make it easier for you by doing some of the legwork and aggregating a selection of the most affordable (by average yearly net price, as reported to NCES – National Center for Education Statistics).
Schools have been organized in alphabetical order and presented in small blocks across the alphabet for convenience. Each school’s nursing programs have been summarized, along with a partial list of curriculum courses for some or all of the programs. You can use the information here to narrow your search for a suitable online nursing degree, and reduce the time and effort. In some cases, you may need to contact an admissions counselor for further program details, if the school’s Web site does not provide what you need.
Notes:
- Programs that are listed by colleges/ universities as being fully/ 100% online may still have some in-person requirements, such as start/end of semester meetups or final exams. In the latter case, a student not living close to the college in question will likely have a choice of places local to them where they can complete their exam. In-person practicums are also common for nursing programs, and students will typically have healthcare environments local to them from which to choose where to complete their clinical work.
- Programs listed here include both those that are partly online (hybrid) and fully online.
- Online/remote courses can be either synchronous or asynchronous. The former has the requirement that students attend classes live, either online via a Web browser or remotely, possibly via remote video feed or closed-circuit television, as the case may be. (Note: remote video/TV is a less common option.)
- Degree-completion programs are typically at the bachelor’s level and allow for previous academic credits, such as for an existing associate’s degree, to be used towards requirements. An example is the RN-to-BSN program, which is fairly common in nursing. Some institutions also offer an RN-to-MSN program.
- Accreditation of programs vary by institution and can change from time to time. Please check institutional/ program accreditation before applying, as not doing so may affect your ability to transfer between institutions and/or to receive financial aid.
- Because of federal requirements for online education, some state boards of education protocols may mean that you cannot receive credit for an academic program offered by an institution from specific other states. Always check if you are eligible before applying to an institution.
- Since this online degree guide for nursing programs lists a mix of online and hybrid programs, most of which have practicums/ clinical work, we chose to list the average yearly net price per college/ university. NCES defines this as the average cost for the last reporting year for an undergrad student, after financial aid has been factored in. This includes all expenses – tuition, fees, books, cost of living. Note that because of this definition, net price can change from year to year.
- Some institutions have special fees for online courses, while others charge less than for on-campus attendance. The net price is only a guideline.
- For graduate program costs, please consult each institution’s Web site.
- COLLEGES: Please contact us if a program is either listed in error or no longer available.
